Codeacademy HW

Activity: Review Difficulty
Leanne Liu

In the game, “Deathforest,” the player must run from a monster that chases after him while trying to find all of the items in the forest to fix his broken motorcycle. There are other minor monsters other than the main monster that also chases after the player. Intrinsic skill is required to successfully run from the monsters and pick up items. Stress is displayed because there are objects and obstacles in the forest that block the player’s way and the monster follows the player most of the time. If the player meets a dead end or stops moving, the monster will eat the player. The game itself is very difficult, since the player’s only source of light is his dying flashlight and as a result he encounters jumpscares in the forest. Eerie music gets louder and louder as the monster comes nearer, building up the tension. As long as the player stays calm and knows what to do next, he will be able to clear the game in a number of tries.

Activity 8: Game Stories

1 The author of Immortall tried to use emotional tone in the game by having the characters cry when a family member died. He made sure the characters were also scared when armed soldiers and tanks appeared. The author gave emotions to the characters to portray how people would actually act/feel during war. There is no happy ending to this game, and the whole idea is that there is living and dying of the characters.

2 In the game, “Company of Myself,” the author used narrative to teach the player how to maneuver through the game. The narration is in first person and explains the character’s condition and directions on how to play.

3 In “Moving Stories,” the author used agency by altering the story (narration) by choosing specific items to pack. This game is a non-linear game, with different endings depending on what you choose to pack.

Activity 5: Design characters

1 Alisa (Ice Queen)
Backstory: The setting is in a fantasy world, and she is the queen of the Ice Land.
Personality: A very cold, cool kind of character. She rarely smiles and when she does, it is hard to tell. Part of that reason is because Ice Land is so cold people’s faces freeze.
Special Skill: She can create ice and snow however she wills.

2 Timothy (Drunk)
Backstory: Wanting to get rich quick, he began an alcohol business and spent all his money in investing it. However, his business fails and Timothy was left a penniless drunk man.
Personality: Although he experienced bankruptcy and business failures, he does not learn from his mistakes and keeps on wanting to hit the jackpot quick. He has a short temper and is impatient.
Special Skill: Throwing alcohol bottles

3 Bryson
Background: A warrior to protect the emperor. The setting is in a fantasy type world, which one emperor rules all. Although Bryson is one of the top warriors in the kingdom, he actually despises fighting. He wishes to stop combats but peer pressure is just too strong for him.
Personality: Looks tough but is actually a scardy cat. He likes peace than war, and has a weak heart because he cannot stand up for what he believes. He is more of a background character type individual, and follows the crowd.

Assignment 2: Character Concept Sketch

Character Analysis
Leanne Liu

My friend Katie’s (pseudonym used) character stands out. She is a very cold person, and does not show much emotion. Her smiles are somewhat forced or otherwise, small. Compared to other people, she definitely has a colder air surrounding her, almost like an ice queen. Although she is pretty, she does not smile often so she only has a limited number of friends. She speaks in a smaller, huskier voice than I do, and generally does not talk much. People have a hard time trying to understand what she is thinking because she has a poker face on at all times. Katie is so far the perfect ice queen character I have seen, and her cool personality stands out from people I know.

Don’t Look Back Response
Leanne Liu

1 This game relates back to the Greek story of Orphesus because the basic concept overlap each other. In this game, the main character stands in front of a grave to begin, which is most likely a reference to Orphesus’s dead wife. Then the character moves through a field based on red color, connecting to the underworld in Greek mythology. The biggest connection is the fact the floating woman disappears when the main character turns back. In the Greek story, the wife disappeared after Orphesus looked back.

2 The game developer Terry remixed or modernized the story in his game by giving the main character a gun to fight the spiders, bats, and other monsters he faces along his journey. The original story takes place when guns did not exist, so the battle aspect modernized Terry’s game.

Game types

The game type I liked most were the shooter games. The shooter games did not have complex controls which made it easier for the player to move on with the story. However, I was not very good at gaming in general, so I lost the game instantly. The reasons I liked shooter games are that there was a plot and action. The game has a simple objective to shoot the enemies and move on with the storyline, which I thought was easy to follow and enjoyable. In other words, simplicity was key.
On the other hand, my least favorite game type was FPS. My biggest reason for not liking it is that the controls were very hard to use. Moving the character with my left hand and changing the camera with my right hand was very difficult. The camera view was confusing as I spun around many times to figure out where I was going. Simply put, complexity killed my interest in FPS.

Activity 1
Leanne Liu

In the game pong, the “play” element is to bounce the ball back to the player’s opponent. The “goal” is to score seven points first, and the player does that by shooting (bouncing) the ball behind the opponent’s paddle. Victory occurs when the goal, which is to score seven points first, is achieved. If the opponent does not successfully bounce the ball back, then the player who made the shot will score a point. Termination occurs when the player’s opponent scores seven points first. The player(s) “pretend” to be a ping pong player through bouncing the ping pong ball back and forth to each other. The “rules” are to slide the paddle up and down to move it to a place where the player can send the ball back. Unfortunately, the paddle cannot move side to side which makes the game more challenging. The ball will also bounce around the borders of the field of the game, requiring the players to think about where the ball will come next. The movement of the ball is predictable when the speed of the ball is slow, which is near the beginning of the game. However the speed of the ball will increase after a number of rallies, reducing the time to think about the next movement of the ball. Thus the ball’s bouncing movements make the game more difficult.
